Spanish and French are two sister Romance languages, both descended from Vulgar Latin. This kinship makes learning French considerably easier for Spanish speakers: vocabulary is often transparent (información/information, comunicación/communication), grammatical structure is similar (gender, number, conjugations), and many linguistic concepts are shared. However, this closeness is also a source of specific spelling mistakes. Spanish speakers learning French tend to "Hispanicize" French words, which produces predictable but persistent errors. Dictation is the ideal tool for identifying and correcting these interferences between the two languages.
The typical spelling mistakes of Spanish speakers in French are well documented. Accents are the first difficulty: Spanish uses a single type of accent (the acute accent), whereas French uses three (acute é, grave è, circumflex ê). Spanish speakers often confuse é and è, or omit the grave and circumflex accents. Double consonants are another major pitfall: Spanish uses very few (ll, rr, cc, nn), whereas French is full of them (appartement, appeler, communication, grammaire). Nasal sounds (an, on, in, un), which do not exist in Spanish, cause problems in speech that carry over into writing: confusion between an and en, between on and om, between in and im. Finally, orthographic false friends are numerous: "dirección" becomes "direction" and not "*direcçion", "profesión" becomes "profession" and not "*profesion".
