How it works

The TCF (Test de Connaissance du Français) is a standardized test issued by France Éducation International that assesses the French level of non-native speakers. Unlike the DELF and the DALF, the TCF is not a diploma but a placement test: it assigns a level (A1 to C2) based on the results obtained. The TCF is recognized by French universities, companies and government agencies, notably for immigration procedures to Canada and France. The written expression section, which is mandatory in some versions of the TCF, is directly affected by your command of spelling.
The TCF comes in several versions: TCF for the general public, TCF for access to French nationality (TCF ANF), TCF for Quebec (TCF Québec) and TCF for the French resident card (TCF CRF). The written expression section includes three tasks of increasing difficulty: writing a short message (60 to 120 words), writing an article or a formal letter (120 to 150 words), and writing an argumentative text (120 to 180 words). Each task is assessed on structure, vocabulary, grammar and spelling. The score you obtain determines your CEFR level, and a few points more or less can move you from one level to another.
